The Art of Being Comfortable in Your Own Skin

As I enter my 40th year, it’s made me think more about what I want to work on in life and the types of people I want to surround myself with. While the world may want us to be more "filtered” and act a certain way, there is a quiet, radical power in simply being okay with who you are. We spend so much time trying to smooth out any imperfections when those imperfections make us unique and authentic.

Learning to be comfortable in your own skin isn't about reaching a state of perfection; it’s about reaching a state of peaceful acceptance.

1. Own Your Narrative

We are often our own worst critics and oftentimes our own worst critic can project on others as well. We often view our lives through our own personal anxieties, which is through a lens of “not enough” or worrying what others will think. A more peaceful existence starts when you stop looking for external validation to fill any internal insecurities.

Celebrate the "Flaws": How you tell a story, your unconventional career path aren’t bugs in the system; they are highlight reels of your life.

Stop the Comparison Game: Comparison is a loser’s game. Celebrate the uniqueness of your life.

2. The Power of "Not My Circus"

We have a finite amount of emotional energy every day. If you spend it all on minor inconveniences—a rude comment from a stranger, a late flight, or a typo in an email—you’ll have nothing left for the things that actually matter.

Ask yourself: Will this matter in five years?

If the answer is no, don't give it more than five minutes of your frustration. This isn't about being indifferent; it’s about being selective with your peace.

3. Practice Radical Presence

Being comfortable in your skin means actually living in it, rather than hovering three feet above it worrying about the future.

"Peace is the result of retraining your mind to process life as it is, rather than as you think it should be."

Final Thought

When you stop trying to be everything to everyone, you finally have the space to be something to yourself. Take a deep breath, let the trivial things slide, and remember: you are the only person who gets to live your life. You might as well enjoy the skin you're in.
